Heading west on Carbon Coal Road, where the pavement ends and the dirt road begins, is the Gallup Energy Logistics Park. Other than that, not much else.
That could change in the near future with the proposed construction of a data center in the area.

Strong rains cause flooding and other damage in the Gallup area

Heavy rain Tuesday afternoon in Gallup, New Mexico, and the surrounding area caused strong flooding for several hours.
The storm also produced dangerous lightning, including a discharge that struck a downtown building on the corner of Coal Avenue and Third Street, igniting a fire.
That's according to Gallup Fire Department spokesman Andrew Laweka, who said crews responded to a 1:50 p.m. alarm at the site and encountered a fire in the second floor of the building.
No injuries were reported according to Laweka, who said a full investigation should be completed by Wednesday afternoon.
On an unrelated note, University of New Mexico-Gallup was closed as of noon Tuesday due to a water outage.
According to an electronic alert, the campus will close Wednesday at 9 a.m. due to an ongoing water outage. Updates will be shared via email as they become available.
Students, faculty and staff should call 505-863-7500 for more information on Thursday.
