Since the early 1980’s Mary Ellen Ipiotis has been involved with public radio broadcasting.
She began at KANW-FM as a host for a Spanish music program on Saturday mornings. It featured musicians from New Mexico. Operating a control board with 8-track “carts,” reel-to-reel tape players and turntables, she also reported the news and weather.
In 2002, Ipiotis joined KUNM-FM where the studios featured an updated and reconfigured computerized digital operation that included mini-discs and cassette recorders while holding true to (state of the art) turntables and keeping up with the latest ways and means to operate.
As part of a trio of co-hosts for the “MusiCaldo” show, Ipiotis has been featured on KGLP since 2022. The program currently airs on Sundays at 7 p.m. and she enjoys “the privilege and pleasure of presenting flavorful and diverse, old and new Latinique sounds.”

MusiCaldo includes Latin-influenced music with introductions to, or the rediscovery of, familiar covers and contemporary music,
reimagined and reinterpreted in the far reaching realms of Latin Jazz, Mariachi, Tango, Nuevo Flamenco, Salsa, Samba, Bossa Nova and Boleros to old school Chicano tunes that swept the United States from the 1960’s-1980’s.
In addition, classic Corridos and folk stories may be shared by the people of New Mexico and other places where music dares you to ignore it’s vibrancy and great spirit, often a blending of different styles, such as how a toe-tapping Ranchera can morph easily into the Zydeco sound, where the connection and transcendence of boundaries translates into soul- stirring rich rhythm and bridges multi cultures.
